Beautiful villages of Great Britain – Stansted Mountfitchet
Besides the main atraction in the UK which is the city of London, there are also small villages that are worth to visit, for they conserve the history that shaped the beauty of the british culture.
One of them is Stansted Mountfitchet, an important attraction for tourists and a small but representative part of the british cultural landscape.
Stansted Mountfitchet is part of county of Essex, England, with an average population of 5533, and is located 56 km (35 miles) north of London. The famous Stansted Airport is only 3 km (2 miles) away so if you want to travel to London or Cambridge, you can transfer from Stansted by taxi .
A short brief history of the village: Stansted was founded by the Saxons long before the normans invaded England. Although, the other half of the village’s name (Mountfitchet) was given by a Norman baron after the Normand invasion.
Around the remains of his castle is the reconstruction of a Norman fortress that dates back to 1066 AD. Today the castle is reconstructed to reflect the original image and architecture, with different building sections, medieval decorations and war weapons that will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time.
Another popular atraction with historical value is St Mary the Virgin’s Church, an Anglican church that was built in 1220. After almost 800 years, St Mary remains the most important village church for the people of Stansted Mountfitchet.
By far, the most seeked attraction in Stansted is the Toy Museum, the largest one in the world. It is the keeper of 80,000 toys, books and social games that cover a time span beginning with the late Victorian period to our days! What a great place to bring your children and have them wandering through Lego and Brio tables, World War I and World War II simulation scenes! Not to mention the famous puppet theatre!
A haunted manor, located within the Toy Museum, will give you the creeps if you have the courage to wander through spooky tunnels and chambers. Or maybe you’re more into dinosaurs, so you can go and visit the Paleontology House and admire the full scale dinosaurs that were brought to life thanks to modern technology!
Regarding its economy and development, Stansted Mountfichet is considered the fourth in UK at internet usage, being recognised by Google eTown Awards as a place where businesses are web-friendly, their presence on the internet contributing to the economic growth. Stansted was ranked behind Richmond, Edinburgh and Stratford.
Although it is a small village, Stansted provides many options for entertainment like pubs, restaurants, cinemas, shops or theatres. It is a place where culture and history blend perfectly with modern ways to have fun and spend your leisure time. Also, don’t forget that you are 30 minutes away from UK’s capital, so you don’t need anything else than your spirit of adventure to have a wonderful vacation.
