What can you do when you get locked out?
Unfortunately, it happens. Usually, one gets locked out of the house when time is critical, and then the emergency state escalates. So, what can you do in such a situation? Here are some tips I gathered researching online, just for your information, because usually getting locked out implies panic and blocking. You simply don’t know how to act, but for that … read on.
- Call for help
If you live with other people, try calling them to let you in. They may be away too, but maybe one of them is nearby and is able to come and open the door with the key he/she has. If you live alone and you pay rent for the place, try calling your landlord, which usually has a copy of the key and may let you in. Try all the options you have in this sense, before taking the next step.
- Look for open windows
This may seem a bit challenging, but maybe – just maybe – you could climb in through an open window, of course in the case you left one open. Just make sure you have an ID at you, so you don’t get into trouble if someone mistakes you with a burglar.
- Try to pick the lock
Again, make sure you have proof that you live there. If you will try this, you’ll see that it’s not as easy as in the movies. Depending of the closing system, you could use a credit card or some paper clips. Be happy if you succeed in less than half an hour, because – as I said – it’s not that easy. Eventually you will get the door open, but if not…
- Take off the door handle
This may be a solution in some cases, unless the lock you have doesn’t offer that possibility. By taking the door handle off and also the plates covering the locking mechanism, you will gain access to the part of the lock that will allow you to unlock it “from the inside”.
- Call for professional help
If you exhausted all your options, maybe it’s now time to look for professional help. Lock out SW6 services may be the option you need in this case.
You might want to keep the contact data in your agenda, as a locksmith will be useful to you in various other cases: broken locks, broken keys, lock repair, key replacement, whole locking systems replacement in case of a burglary are just a few services that professional locksmiths are able to provide.
Long story short, this last step should be in fact the first one, as the other 4 ways may imply the risk of damaging the door or lock components.
Once you solved the situation, take some further steps to make sure that the next time you are prepared. If you find yourself locked out again, it may be useful to:
- Give a spare key to a friend, a co-worker or a neighbor, for easier access.
- Keep a spare key from your home at the office and vice-versa. You never know when you might get locked out of the office in the same way.
- Get used to repeating yourself “keys, wallet, phone” each time you leave your home or your office.
